Collecting Old Letters and Correspondence
December 15th, 2009
Some people collect old letters and other correspondence? Why, you might ask? Probably, for most collectors it has little to do with monetary value.
There is a wealth of information in many people’s letters. When you receive a dull letter, you might exclaim, why there isn’t anything of interest in this letter, but some people are amazing story tellers and their letters reflect that.
Collectible letters might be written by or to famous people. In that case they may very well, have some monetary value so take good care of them. Most of us do not receive letters from famous people or celebrities unless we personally know them. If you are hoping for a George Washington letter, don’t count on it, but sometimes a letter from a lesser personality is available.
You might come across a letter that was written from a place that is very significant such as the Alamo or Pearl Harbor. The historical value of the letter you found might be considerable depending on what it includes.
Movie stars or rock stars used to correspond, but now it seems the art of letter writing is not seen much today. A famous stars letter could add insight into making a movie or the writing of a song.
Among those who corresponded most frequently, will be the literary group of people who were authors and poets and screen writers. Those letters may be far more common and easier to find.
Values for letters by famous people could make the price very stiff if that letter is significant in other ways as well.
You might find collecting letters that are of little value of interest and still stimulating, if everyday people are in interesting places or part of exceptional situations. Many soldiers’ letters have a poignancy and are so endearing that they would be great to collect. People visiting exotic places would certainly have a lot to say that would bee worthwhile.
As you collect, you will learn at lot about other times and places and maybe about human nature. It can be a very fun filled experience and collecting field.
