Collecting Advertising
March 2nd, 2010Advertising has been collected forever and with every passing day more advertising is produced so the field is varied and extensive. There are so many popular advertising items from the past that many people just collect one type of advertising while others enjoy locating a whole gamut of products. It is definitely a piece of history.
Most people know how popular beer signs have become; in fact any breweriana is very collectible. Coco Cola has many loyal collectors of its original merchandise and advertising, and even more collectors who now collect the reproduction items.
People collect tobacco advertising including tins and cigar boxes and the field there is absolutely endless. All types of bottle openers, matches, and related items such as ashtrays were done for advertising purposes.
Another great advertising area is food. Many fast food places had mascots which became dolls or the packaging itself was interesting. This is another filed where variety will keep you collecting for years.
The gas companies and the car manufacturers started making vehicles and other items for advertising purposes. They produced catalogs, calendars, and many types of models to add to their advertising program.
The people who manufactured guns and ammo also produced a wealth of paper products, sometimes prints with their logs on and this area seems to be a huge reproduced area as well. Tin signs can be found now for Remington and many other advertisers.
So, if the colorful lithographs of the past appeal to you, collecting advertising items could be a real hobby.
