Grow another Great Collection with Vintage Garden Catalogs and Seed Packets
Thursday, March 4th, 2010By this time in winter, gardeners everywhere are bursting at the seams to get outdoors and garden. They have been sighing over seed catalogs for weeks if not months. They have planned and planned again their new gardens. They have selected additions to the garden plan they already have implemented. They are in their glory and itching to get fingers dirty.
This phenomenon is nothing new. Seed catalogs have been many women’s brush with art for over a century. And yes, art is if you ever look at the beautiful catalogs of vintage era or come across those beautiful seed packets. So why not grow a collection from such lovely items. For the type of items they are, people still find them in great condition. They may have been loved hard as they were browsed through again and again and of older vintage, but interest in them still remains. And why not?
Many of them were written in a folksy manner so it felt like a letter from friends. Some catalog owners even received letters back from their customers who indeed did look at them as friends. They even sent photos of their kids feeding pigs or their sons in uniform.
They have been gazing at those things since the 180’s and we still spend tons of time with them today. They were proud of their victory gardens and growing the biggest and the best has been a favorite pastime forever.
Most people will agree the pictures were the best reason to see them. The beautiful photos of flowers and veggies are still admired. They are often truly works of art when it comes to the lithographed types of items. Some had colorful and interesting characters on seed packets and catalogs.
You will find much to collect, the oldest ones being the most fun and probably the most valuable. Some people frame the seed packets. Care for them just like you would other ephemera (paper collectibles.)
Some of the oldest pictures from these items are being restored and reproduced on beautiful items to purchase and collect. Have fun.
